8 August in cricket
8 August
Dates follow UTC, the same clock as our daily posts.
On This Day in 2011, Ajantha Mendis produced one of the most devastating spells T20 internationals have ever seen. The Sri Lankan mystery spinner tore through Australia, claiming 6 wickets for just 16 runs to leave the visitors reeling. It remains a benchmark performance for the format.
That same match delivered plenty of runs too. Mahela Jayawardene anchored Sri Lanka with a classy 86 off 63 balls, while Shane Watson counter-attacked for Australia with 57 from just 24 deliveries. John Hastings chipped in with 3 for 14.
Years later, the date kept producing fireworks. In 2023, Suryakumar Yadav blazed 83 off 44 against West Indies, and Wanindu Hasaranga starred with both bat and ball in the LPL, scoring 64 off 27 and taking 4 for 17.

Coverage & definitionsCricsheet ball-by-ball · matches played on this date (UTC) · data through 24 October 2026Show ▾
Source. Ball-by-ball data from Cricsheet. New matches are loaded from Cricsheet twice a day (10:00 and 22:00 UTC), typically a day or two after a match is published there.
Internationals. T20 internationals are included only when both teams are ICC full members. Fixtures against Associate nations (e.g. Netherlands, Scotland, Nepal, USA) are not in the dataset, so international totals for players who faced them are lower than their full career figures. Afghanistan men's internationals are absent for a different reason: Cricsheet has withheld every match involving the Afghanistan men's team since 14 November 2024, so none of them can be loaded. Every full member's totals are lower by the matches they played against Afghanistan, and Afghanistan men's players do not appear at all. Afghanistan women's matches are unaffected.
Leagues. Leagues: IPL, BBL, PSL, CPL, SA20, MLC, ILT20, BPL, LPL, WBBL, WPL — full history of each. Domestic T20 competitions outside this list (e.g. the Blast, SMAT, Super Smash) are not included.
Exclusions. Super overs are excluded from every total. A match abandoned without a ball bowled has no ball-by-ball file and is not in the dataset, even where a toss took place and official records credit the named players with an appearance. M can therefore sit one or two below a player's official career figure. Match appearances (M) come from the playing XI in each match file, so a match where a player neither batted nor bowled still counts as an appearance. Where M is missing, that player's appearances have not been loaded yet.
"Best" innings and spells are ranked by runs and by wickets then runs conceded; a quiet date here is only quiet within this dataset.
