8 October in cricket
8 October
Dates follow UTC, the same clock as our daily posts.
On This Day in 2020, Jonny Bairstow lit up the IPL with a brilliant 97 off 55 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Punjab Kings, falling agonisingly short of a century. Rashid Khan complemented the batting effort superbly on the same day, claiming 3 for 12 to tighten the screws on Punjab.
The date has long belonged to explosive hitting. In 2021, Ishan Kishan blazed 84 off just 32 balls for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with 82 off 40 in the same fixture.
With the ball, Chloe Tryon produced a standout display for South Africa, taking 4 for 15 against New Zealand in 2023, and Megan Schutt's miserly 3 for 3 against New Zealand in 2024 was simply outstanding.
