5 October
Dates follow UTC, the same clock as our daily posts.
On This Day, in 2023, Hayley Matthews lit up the contest between West Indies and Australia with a dazzling 79 off just 40 balls in T20I cricket. Her blistering knock stands as the finest batting effort recorded on this date, a reminder of the West Indies opener's attacking brilliance against one of the game's strongest sides.
The date has long belonged to explosive strokeplay. Back in 2012, Chris Gayle smashed 75 off 41 against Australia, while George Bailey answered with a rapid 63 from 29. That same year, Julie Hunter produced the standout bowling display, claiming 5 for 22 against West Indies.
More recently, Tahlia McGrath's 65 off 34 in 2023 and Alyssa Healy's 67 in 2018, backed by Ellyse Perry's 4 for 21, kept the fireworks coming.
